Tasmanian State Migration Plan ‐ Occupation List FY2011/2012

Important information for applicants

The Tasmanian State Migration Plan (SMP) ‐ Occupation List has been compiled by the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and the Arts (DEDTA). Applicants must meet Tasmanian sponsorship eligibility requirements as well as the visa requirements outlined by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) to be considered for state visa sponsorship.

This list is primarily for subclasses 176/475. For subclasses 487/886, all occupations from the State and Territory Skilled Occupations Lists 1&2 (SATSOL) (i.e. SOL Schedule 4) can be considered; however applicants must meet all the sponsorship eligibility requirements in order to apply for sponsorship. Offshore applicants with occupations outside the Tasmanian SMP list who have secured a job offer in Tasmania may also be considered for 475 sponsorship. When applicants with non‐SMP occupations are sponsored, they are counted toward the 100 spaces allocated to Tasmania for ‘off‐list nominations’ in the fiscal year 2010/11. When the 100 spaces are filled, such off‐list nominations will be capped.

If you are currently in Australia on a visa which allows you to relocate to Tasmania and you wish to apply for subclasses 475/176, you are strongly encouraged to achieve at least 3 months work experience in Tasmania prior to your sponsorship application. This will give you a valuable insight as to what it is like to live and work in Tasmania. If you do not have Tasmanian work experience at the time of applying for sponsorship, whilst having a visa which allows you to do so, it may be difficult for you to demonstrate a genuine commitment to live and work in Tasmania.

Many occupations for 176 require a job offer or strong interest from Tasmanian employers. In other words, applicants who have not secured either are not eligible to apply. A Job offer must be presented in writing including the duties and work conditions. ‘Strong interest’ means that the employer has examined the applicant’s qualification, skill set, experiences and English language proficiency and has confirmed that the applicant is highly employable upon arrival in Tasmania. The employer may also want to address recruitment difficulties for the profession, express an intention to interview the applicant on arrival and willingness to refer the applicant to other similar businesses if there is no vacancy within his/her business when the applicant arrives in the state. Such feedback from Tasmanian employers will be carefully assessed by DEDTA, especially if the feedback is from a small business (with a total number of employees less than 10). The similar set of criteria with that for an Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (RSMS) may be applied to examine the businesses capacity to employ the applicant for a full time position (i.e. legally operating in the state, genuine need for the position, financial resources etc).

International English Language Testing System (IELTS) scores required for Tasmanian sponsorship maybe higher than those required by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship or the designated skills assessing authority. If no IELTS score is specified on this SMP – Occupation List, applicants will need to meet DIAC’s English language threshold or the score specified by the relevant skills assessment authority if applicable.

The occupations on this list do not represent specific vacancies nor any promise of a job. Should you be granted a state sponsored visa and settle in Tasmania, it is your responsibility to secure employment. Please note that migrants receive no ‘special treatment’ and you will have to compete with local candidates for available jobs.
